What is "buy it for life"?
BIFL products share a common trait: they were designed to be used daily for decades, not replaced annually. They tend to be simpler, more repairable, and made from materials that improve with age or at least don't degrade. The original Casio F91W is still being made. Lodge skillets get better every year. Nalgene will replace yours for free if it ever breaks.
How we choose products
We cross-reference three types of sources before adding anything:
- → Reddit's r/BuyItForLife: the most honest long-term product reviews on the internet. We look for products that appear in top posts consistently over years.
- → Owner ratings, read closely: a star figure on its own can flatter a product, so we read the reviews rather than stopping at the number. Volume matters: 10,000 reviews is more credible than 100.
- → Enthusiast communities: watchmaking forums, outdoor gear communities, and cooking subreddits where people compare decade-long experiences.
What this list will not do
- ✓ No endless lists. Every category is short enough to read in a minute
- ✓ No filling a category with one brand's catalogue
- ✓ No products that release new versions annually
- ✓ No phones, tablets or trend-driven items, and nothing that wears out on a season's cycle. A boot that can be resoled indefinitely is a different object from a shirt, so footwear earns a place where clothing does not
